If you didn’t see this coming, you need a new pair of glasses. Elon Musk’s gonna Elon Musk. ETA: Tesla just confirmed that only NEW reservations have to wait until mid-2018. We’ll see...

lol hes good at hyping up stuff but delivering not so much

I work in an industry where it is VERY important to not over promise and under deliver, and to set realistic outcomes with the greatest amount of certainty possible.
Elon Musk works in the exact opposite industry, apparently.

“Our production is on schedule and our rockets don’t blow up!”
“No you can’t see progress reports.”
“We are also announcing a partnership with Theranos.”

...and stockholders are selling (look at the size of that red “sell volume” bar!!):

Honestly this comes as no surprise...and I even like Elon

I love the cars (okay, just the Model S, and only in P85D and higher forms), but sometimes Elon makes me feel like the company is a house of cards.

It doesn’t surprise me one bit either, but isn’t that saying something about our expectations for the company and how much we trust what they say?
![]() 10/18/2016 at 13:35 |

Maybe because it is a house of cards

Stockholders see a sinking ship, much like I do.

all assuming they are going to be really good, mostly trouble free cars.
LOLNope :]

I can’t really say that right now, but I can’t refute it either given their constant let downs and delays.
Who knows.

Still up on the day!
![]() 10/18/2016 at 13:39 |

The stock is still up for the day, so there are at least a few folks that think otherwise.

HUGE nope.
![]() 10/18/2016 at 13:41 |

I noticed that. I can’t say what I think of the stock (thanks, FINRA), but there are obviously a few people that think this is a minor inconvenience rather than a systematic issue.

I wonder if that pool of people who saw fit to give him an interest free loan in exchange for the opportunity to buy a car will think it’s as minor as some investors do.

Fanbois will keep being Fanbois. Some may change their minds, but not a large percentage of them.
![]() 10/18/2016 at 13:54 |

Fanbois, sure, but I’m not sure how many of those 400k people are fanbois and how many just wanted the perceived status of owning a Tesla. I guess the number of deposits refunded will give the answer.

Tesla just confirmed that only NEW reservations will have to wait until mid-2018. I’m still pessimistic about the initial rollout, though (as history has dictated about their expected launches).

I think theyre damned either way. He needs maximum hype because tesla is still a smaller niche company, but then he gets this backlash. Its a difficult balance.

What? No...... Tesla is a well run and professional company.
I assure you.

Tesla blows

All that means is they think it will take at least 3 quarters of production to fill the existing orders they already received.
Ergo, the date deliveries will begin has not changed at all.
They’re just managing the expectations of anyone else who wants to plunk down a deposit for a Model 3... basically saying that almost a year’s worth of production is already spoken for.
Nice problem to have...

If that was true, then how do you explain this bit of info from Consumer Reports?
Having said that, I know the Prius is far more trouble-free than the Model S. But this bit of info tells me that while Teslas aren’t totally trouble free, they’re nowhere near 1970s-Jaguar-dreadful.
The problems aren’t bad enough to cause people to be unhappy with their cars.
And they’re actually rated as being more reliable than the recent Mercedes S-Class, Jaguar XJ and Maserati Ghilbi.
And if you think the Ford Focus is a decent, reasonably trouble-free car, well what Tesla builds is rated higher as well in terms of being trouble-free.

The original alert/story said that everything was pushed back to mid-2018. I’m still apprehensive to take them at their word about on-time delivery, considering that we’ve heard this song multiple times before and the ending has always been the same (product release pushed back a few quarters).
Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m right. We’ll see.

Note that the doc you posted is customer satisfaction, not product quality. We all know about their quality issues with the Model X, as it’s been documented on Jalopnik.
Don’t get me wrong, as I love the Model S, but delivery has been a major issue with them.

Yeah, I know it’s customer satisfaction. My point is that while a Model S will have more problems on average than a Prius, it’s not bad to the point that people are dissatisfied.
And while there’s ancedotal evidence that the Model X is worse than the S, according to Consumer Reports, there isn’t enough data to report on Model X reliability yet... I looked for it. And we all know why the Model X was delayed by almost a year.
